Chichester College student James King wins Master Builder Award

Chichester-based apprentice wins Master Builder Award

Chichester College student James King has been honoured at a regional awards ceremony.

James, who is on a level 3 brickwork apprenticeship, was named Apprentice of the Year at the Federation of Master Builders regional awards in Bournemouth recently.

James works for Guilfoyle Construction – who also won an award in the New Home category – and studies at the college. He said: “Going back to college for an apprenticeship was a big step, especially with a young family.

“This award – and the chance to represent the college and my employer at the national final – has made it all worthwhile.

He was up against stiff competition for the title, with a record number of entries for this year’s awards.

John Guilfoyle, James’ employer, said: “It was a great honour to attend the awards and see James win Apprentice of the Year.

“It was especially pleasing because he was nominated by the college, ourselves and one of the clients he has worked on a project for.

“James is currently in his third year of his apprenticeship and demonstrates maturity beyond his years in everything he does.

“It is no coincidence that Guilfoyle Construction also won the award for New Home at the same event as we try to instil a culture of excellence, something that James has duly honoured on this occasion.

“His success is down to his all-round professional performance and engagement through his qualification at college, a willingness to take on challenges and responsibility at work – as well as generally being an all-round nice guy!”

Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chichester College Principal, added: “James is currently the only apprentice studying a level three qualification in brickwork at Chichester College, which demonstrates his commitment to his trade.

“It takes dedication and drive to push forward and to reach the standards that James has. I know his lecturers are extremely proud of his achievements – as we all are.”

James will now be put forward for the national awards, which will be announced in September.
