Job Details

Advanced Apprentice Teaching Assistants are appointed to work within the school as part of a team under the general direction of the headteacher. Their deployment will depend upon pupils needs, pupil numbers, staffing organisation and additional responsibilities as designated by the headteacher and SMT. Deployment will be reviewed annually as part of the Advanced Apprentice Teaching Assistants Professional Development and Review meetings.

There will be two parts to the role:

To work with a designated mentor in the school to develop the practical skills and competence required to achieve the practical standards needed for a Teaching Assistant.

To attend Central Sussex College as required to work towards developing the knowledge and understanding to achieve Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools.

DUTIES The Advanced Apprentice Teaching Assistant will be under the leadership and supervision of the Class Teacher or SENCO. The duties can be outlined as follows:-

Support the Pupil by:

1. Undertaking activities with individuals, small groups or large groups of children to facilitate their physical, emotional and educational development and ensure their safety as directed by the class teacher, SENCO or headteacher.

2. Carrying out pre-determined educational activities and work programmes whilst promoting independent learning.

3. Working to establish a supportive relationship with the children and adults concerned.

4. Encouraging inclusion of children with special needs.

5. Promoting and reinforcing childrens self esteem.

6. Encourage positive attitudes and social interaction.

7. Engage in liaison with outside agencies to support programme of work where necessary.

8. Undertaking training as required.

Support the Teacher by:

1. Monitoring and assessing individual childrens needs and reporting this to the designated teaching professional as appropriate.

2. Keep records of the childrens development and progress in line with the schools assessment for learning policy.

3. Assisting teaching staff in the planning of work programmes for individuals and groups of children. Use own initiative to develop and plan further extended activities as needed.

4. Assisting the teaching staff with pastoral support and ensuring the welfare of the child.

5. Preparation of teaching materials, resources and displays.

6. Assisting and undertaking administrative activities related to the class or child as required.

7. Develop a professional working relationship with teaching staff, offering support and ideas.

Support the School by: 1. Being aware and adhering to school policies and procedures.

2. Being aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school work and to keep confidences as appropriate.

3. Taking a sensitive and professional role in developing partnerships within a supportive team.

4. Developing and maintaining an effective storage and retrieval system for resources.

5. Supporting special events at school by aiding with organisation and preparation.

To undertake any additional duties as assigned by the headteacher and agreed by the post holder.

Training to be Provided:

The apprentice will achieve the combined competency and knowledge based qualification:

• Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

• Functional Skills at level 1 in ICT (unless exempt via GCSE A-D/E grades)

• Functional Skills at level 2 in English and Maths (unless exempt via GCSE A-C grades)

• Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

• Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

12 Months

Qualifications Required:

Grade C or 4 or above in GCSE Maths and English

Future Prospects:

Depending on budget restrictions there is a possibility of a permanent position on completion of the apprenticeship

The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.70 per hour effective from 1st April 2018. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
