Dv8 Sussex is seeking a Curriculum Area Lead (CAL) to teach and manage Music Production and Performance, and Event Management programmes at our Brighton Centre. The CAL will oversee these curricula at Level 2 and Level 3.

Start date: w/c 2nd September 2019, with the term starting for students on 16th September.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Planning and Design

  • Co-ordinate the Music Production and Performance and Event Management curricula delivery and assessment planning in the Brighton centre, ensuring that the curricula are designed to meet the needs of ALL students and provide a clear plan for assessment, internal verification, and progression.
  • Ensure all course delivery and assessment meets the criteria set out by awarding bodies, ESFA study programme funding guidelines and that these are met in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with the Senior Management Team to sign off curriculum design prior to the commencement of study programmes (16-09-2019).
  • Ensure that student profile information from the admissions process is used to develop and inform curriculum design, and individualised planning for learning.
  • Quality assure the assessment timeline, group profiles, LPs & SOW documentation for own area of the curriculum.
  • Support senior managers (SMT) with the design, implementation and monitoring of the Quality Calendar and Academic Calendar. Ensure that staff meet the deadlines and requirements outlined in both documents.
  • Create a positive environment for learning and set high expectations for the teaching teams in relation to standards of student attendance, punctuality, achievement and the quality of teaching, learning and assessment.

Management of Learning programmes in Own Vocational Area

  • Supervision of Teaching Staff in Allocated Area. Line manage teaching staff in the Music and Event Management teams. Conduct timely appraisals (PDRs) and establish clear, performance-related targets, paying reference to national averages (NARTs).
  • Ensure that staff in own curriculum area complete all required documentation. Assist the Quality Manager with periodic, strategic sampling of documentation to support QA processes.
  • Organise Course Meetings in the relevant curriculum area to coordinate the teaching team and Learning Support staff. Keep accurate records of discussion points and assigned actions, ensuring actions are duly followed up and completion recorded.
  • Oversee the creation of SAR and QIP documentation for own curriculum area, ensuring relevant input from tutor teams.
  • Proactively monitor course performance data including attendance and tracking information derived from Arbor. Use this information to effectively manage performance and maximise learner retention and achievement.
  • Prepare for, and undertake periodic Course Performance Reviews in partnership with senior management to monitor and improve the performance of courses in own curriculum area. This will be in line with dates set out in the Quality and Academic Calendars.
  • Organise teaching cover as required for the designated curriculum area.
  • Support Delivery and Performance Managers in the recording of staff absences on Atlas HR platform.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

  • Plan, deliver and assess RSL Music qualifications.
  • Ensure all students receive an effective initial assessment, accurately identifying any additional learning needs. Ensure that this process supports and informs the learning process, supports individualised target-setting and goal setting and the mapping of progress throughout the programme.
  • If any additional learning support needs are identified, ensure that a clear plan is put in in collaboration with the Learning Support Manager to meet these needs and disseminate accordingly.
  • Ensure that all student pre-enrolment information and initial assessment information (including prior attendance & attainment) is used to plan for effective delivery and differentiation of learning.
  • Oversee and report to SMT on work experience planning and delivery, and quality assure that all destinations (of students) are recorded accurately.
  • Ensure all learners in the curriculum area successfully secure and complete a work experience placement as a required part of their study programmes.
  • Oversee the timetabling of additional ‘catch-up’ sessions for students as and when required.
  • Quality assure ILPs, student live files and 1-2-1 progress reviews to support learning and evidence progress for every learner.
  • Ensure assessment of learning is ongoing, effective and delivered as per the assessment plan/ schedule. Where actions to improve are identified, ensure that a clear plan of action is put in place and followed with demonstrable impact on the quality of assessment, including evidencing and tracking of student progress in conjunction with Lead Tutors, conduct and document learner progress reviews during designated weeks, identified on the Academic Calendar.
  • Ensure that all staff are aware of, and plan for key assessment dates identified on the assessment plan/ schedule.
  • Work with the English and Maths team to ensure that English and Maths are embedded throughout the curriculum and that opportunities to embed are implemented and built into the curricula.
  • Liaise with Curriculum Area Lead and Quality Manager (IQA) as appropriate; to ensure RSL registration, unit delivery and assessment are achieved in a timely manner.
  • Ensure learners in own curriculum area develop beneficial attitudes and approaches to life and work, recording the impact that Dv8 initiatives have in this respect.

Student Services / Student Welfare

  • Liaise with parents and carers as and when required to support student achievement.
  • Monitor, promote and ensure the safety of all learners (safeguarding), ensuring formal recording of any concerns and subsequent reporting/referral to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • Attend Parents Evenings at least twice per year to ensure parents are engaged in the young person's learning journey and aware of progress, including targets, throughout the year.

Other Duties

  • Develop and maintain appropriate competency in digital skills (ILT) relevant to own level of responsibility.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting and complying with, all colleges policies and procedures with particular reference to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Safeguarding, Prevent, Financial regulations, Quality and Health and Safety.
  • Undertake continuing professional development as appropriate. Take a full part in the College staff development programme including the appraisal process.

Person Specification


  • Hold a formal teaching qualification at level 4 (CTLLS or equivalent) or above.
  • Hold a Degree level qualification, ideally in a related sector area (desirable but not essential).

Knowledge and Experience

  • At least two years previous experience of teaching.
  • A demonstrable record of success in previous roles.
  • Significant successful experience of teaching relevant course areas.
  • Up to date knowledge of the subject area, syllabus requirements and appropriate teaching techniques; an awareness of the requirements of awarding bodies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mechanisms for the identification, assessment and support of learner needs.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity within the curriculum, barriers to learning and strategies to overcome these.
  • Practical and professional knowledge of creative industries
