Contract type: Permanent, 37 hours per week, however, for the right candidate there might be flexibility in reducing the hours of the working week.

Attendance at evening meetings is a requirement of the post for which time off in lieu or overtime is payable (over 37 hours per week).

These are exciting times at Crawley Borough Council with ambitious plans for a brand new Town Hall building, a Transformation Programme to deliver new ways of working, clear Corporate Priorities and shared Values and Behaviours creating an organisational culture.

As part of the Democratic Services Team, you will be at the heart of the Council’s decision making processes, supporting Councillors, the Mayor and senior officers to understand the democratic, civic and scrutiny processes.

This new post presents an ideal opportunity to start or further build upon your career in Local Government, giving you broad knowledge of all Council service areas. The role will provide the ideal candidate with comprehensive training in the Council’s decision making processes as well as supporting you to achieve your ADSO Certificate in Democratic Services Knowledge. You’ll learn the process behind committee administration and then, with support, carry out functions such as producing agendas, attending and minuting committee meetings and advising on general enquiries. You will also learn about our civic functions, assisting the Mayoral and Democratic Support Officer with duties for the Mayor.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, both written and oral, who has good IT skills (especially Microsoft Office), can demonstrate flexibility in their work and is a good team player. You must have the ability to be able to prioritise and meet tight deadlines.

The successful candidate will have an interest in the Council decision making processes and be willing to commit to ongoing professional development through a programme of study and inwork support over several years. This commitment will be reflected through the post holder’s salary progression.

Experience of working in Local Government especially in a corporate or legalistic based area environment and / or experience of taking formal minutes would be an advantage.

As a politically restricted post for the purposes of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, the post holder will be unable to take part in political activity as defined in current regulations published by the Secretary of State.
