Duties and Responsibilities

Deputy Nursery Manager:

  • Responsible for overseeing a unit and assisting specialists in the nursery, such as Behaviour management representatives, SENCO, H&S rep, Equal opportunities etc.
  • Ensure that suitable opportunities, activities and resources are provided for all the children relevant to their age/stage and development needs to the requirements of external organisations.
  • Communicate with parents to ensure that all fees are paid and that parents are satisfied with the provision of care provided. You will also know how to operate a fees system including invoicing, collecting money, banking and reporting on financial targets.
  • Ensure that all staff are supported in their training and development and their job satisfaction. Ensure that all staff are mentored /coached appropriately.
  • Support the Nursery Manager and to manage the setting in Managers absence
  • To be committed to the safeguarding of all children in the nursery and your direct care

As a new Day Nursery Little Lancing will require a flexible and versatile Deputy Nursery Manager who will initially be room based for the majority of time. It is envisaged that the role will develop over time, involving more direct nursery management support.

Room Leader:

  • Ensure daily, weekly and monthly checks in the room and agreed action plans are completed effectively
  • Ensuring accident trends are monitored and actioned appropriately
  • Lead and manage your team and ensure they are motivated and trained as per their individual needs, ensuring this meets the needs of the unit
  • Manage resources, organise routines and systems, communicate with senior management team
  • Be competent and effective with settling in profiles for children, alongside their short term, medium term and long term plans, and next steps and learning journeys.

Person Specification 

You will be an exceptional leader who can develop and implement strategy. You will have impeccable interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with colleagues of all levels, being able to build working relationships to ensure common goals can be achieved.

Essential skills/qualifications

  • Hold a minimum of a Level 3 NVQ in Childcare and supervisory training
  • Be an exceptional mentor with proven experience in assisting the development and implementation of strategies in current processes
  • Be an exceptional mentor and early year’s practitioner
  • Have a solid knowledge of the EYFS
  • Have an up-to-date Paediatric First Aid, Safeguarding and Food Hygiene
  • Be able to build brilliant working relationships to ensure common goals can be achieved
  • Need a clear and valid DBS – oversee applicants will need a clear and valid certificate of good conduct
  • Be flexible with start and finishing times
  • Have impeccable interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively to colleagues of all levels of seniority
  • Committed to the safeguarding and protection of children
  • Values and respects the views and needs of children

Desirable skills/qualifications

  • Supervisory/management experience
  • Experience/knowledge of Children’s Act and OFSTED requirements
  • Paediatric First Aid Certificate within 3 years
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation
  • Strong IT skills including Outlook, Word, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Resilience with the ability to work well under pressure
  • Committed to continuous personal and professional development
  • Valid driving license and access to own car
  • Mentoring, coaching, basic counselling

Terms and Conditions

  • The starting salary will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
  • Working hours will be 40 hours per week. Some flexibility is required and you may be required to work occasional extra days and evenings for which time off in lieu will be given. 
  • The annual holiday entitlement is five weeks plus recognised Public Holidays.
  • The employment is subject to a probationary period of six months.  During the probationary period, one months’ notice will be required on either side after which three months’ notice will be required.
  • Contributory Pension Scheme. The College will contribute a sum equivalent to 5% of the employee’s salary provided that the employee contributes 5% or more.

Lancing College is an independent boarding school for boys and girls, located on a site of outstanding natural beauty on the south coast of England between Brighton and Worthing. The College stands in an impressive downland estate of some 550 acres, which includes playing fields, residential properties, and an area now managed as an educational farm.
