Assistant Finance Manager

Location: Brighton, East Sussex
Salary: Circa £30,000
Contract: Full Time, Permanent

Hours: Monday to Friday (37.00 hours per week) but flexibility will be needed as occasional weekend/evening working will be required.

Brighton Students' Union is a dynamic not-for-profit charity which is led by a team of student officers and works solely for our student members. We are dedicated in supporting students of the University of Brighton and ensuring their time at the University is the amazing, life-changing experience it should be. We support students in a variety of ways through the provision of excellent services, facilities and events.

We are currently looking for an experienced Assistant Finance Manager to work in our offices on our Moulsecoomb Campus in Brighton. The Students’ Union covers all University of Brighton sites and travel to other campus locations may be required.

The Role

To support the Finance Manager in the operational and strategic management of the finance function. Provide proactive services to staff and student group leaders, enabling them to pursue best practice in financial management within their respective areas. The post holder will also deputise for the Finance Manager in their absence.

Assistant Finance Manager - Responsibilities and duties:

• Managing Purchase Ledger and Sales Ledger.
• Prepare and run BSU’s Student and Established staff payrolls in accordance with employment law.
• Manage the Sports Clubs and Societies financial transactions, ensuring they are in line with BSU procedures.
• Support the Finance manager in providing financial guidance for staff and student group leaders.
• Assist budget holders with the monitoring of annual budgets.
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
• Support the Finance Manager to produce management reports for key stakeholders as and when required.
• Support the Finance Manager in managing all financial tasks, Audits, VAT, TAX and forward planning.
• Maintain an up-to-date fixed asset register of equipment, fixtures and fittings of all BSU property.
• Liaise with external organisations including suppliers, customers, promotors and sponsors.
• Keep up-to-date with relevant legislation, policies and practices, rules and regulations relevant to the role.
• Assist in key events and activities throughout the year eg elections, open days, freshers’ week and sustainability activities as required.

Assistant Finance Manager – Skills and Experience:

Alongside experience of working in a similar role (preferably within a charitable organisation), the successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate their knowledge and experience of:-

• Degree or equivalent experience & Working towards or completed ACCA Applied Skills or CIMA Management Level
• Significant experience of working in a Finance Team
• Managing multiple payrolls
• Knowledge of Payroll, VAT and Corporation tax legislation
• Experience performing Management and Financial accounting tasks
• Experience using Payroll, Sage accounting software and ledger structures and standards
• Excellent organisational and Administrative skills, able to prioritise a high volume of work & wide range of tasks
• Good communication skills, able to engage with a wide range of people

Knowledge of charity legislation and financial procedures relating to charities would be a distinct advantage.
