Business Description:

We are a modern, mixed practice providing our services to NHS and Private patients. We practice in general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and dental implants. We currently have one trainee dental nurse with us who is completing her exams at the end of the year. We have a dedicated team who will look after all your training needs. You will be fully supported by the team especially the Principal and the Practice Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Keep the clinical areas and all equipment and instruments clean, tidy and sterile as appropriate, according to the Practices health and safety and infection control procedures and manufacturers instructions.

Use all equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturers recommendations ad ensure they are maintained regularly and in good working order.

Provide chair side assistance, ensuring that the correct equipment is available.

Always ensure the care and welfare of patients in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner.

Accurately complete patient clinical records as directed.

Always observe patient confidentiality.

Handle all substances in accordance with Health and Safety policies and COSHH guidelines.

Be familiar and comply with all Health and Safety rules and guidance, including, PPE, COSHH, Mercury handling, infection control, waste disposal etc.

Develop and file radiographs and change radiographic solutions as directed.

Complete laboratory request forms. Keep records of work sent, received and fitted.

Ensure adequate stock levels are maintained and securely stored.

Lease with reception to ensure smooth patient communications and transfer of records.

Attend and participate in practice meetings.

Other duties as necessary for the efficient running of the practice (perhaps including the duties and tasks of the Receptionist as required).

Undergo training as may be required to develop your skills and abilities.

Attend refresher and update training for medical emergencies and CPR.

Act in accordance with the practice rules and codes of conduct.

Participate in the full training and gain competency in the use of surgery machinery.

Understands and demonstrates the importance of cleanliness within the surgery. (including sweeping the floors at the end of every working day.

Understands fully the health and safety considerations in the surgery and takes a proactive approach to ensuring these are realised.

Uses initiative to keep up to date with health and safety rules and guidelines, especially in relation to medical emergencies and CPR.

Understands and demonstrates the need for customer privacy and confidentiality at all times.

PC literate with meticulous attention to detail.

Completes patient and other documentation in an efficient and timely manner.

Takes a proactive approach to ensure stock levels are maintained.

Remains calm and works effectively under pressure/stress.

Deals effectively with customers by displaying a reassuring, friendly, empathetic chairside manner and handles difficult or nervous patients confidently.

Makes self fully available to patients and maintains communication with them.

Takes the initiative in developing own skills and competencies and responds positively to development opportunities.

Ability to build strong working relationships and utilise these for the smooth running of the practice.

Makes a positive contribution at staff meetings.

Training to be Provided:

On Programme Training:

This Apprenticeship Standard will include the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing as the mandatory qualification.

With support from Crawley College, the Apprentice will develop and maintain examples of their work to meet qualification criteria within an electronic portfolio and will be required to pass 4 on line tests at Crawley College before reaching the gateway. Students will be able to re-sit each test once.

College Taught Sessions / Off-the-job training

The Apprentice will be required to attend college based Dental Nursing knowledge sessions and tutorials/revision sessions each Thursday evening 6-9pm during term time at the Crawley Campus.

The option to attend Behaviour workshops to cover key elements of the Behaviours set out in the Standard is advisable. There are 5 optional monthly Behaviour workshops delivered at Crawley College on Tuesdays (9:30am-3:30pm). The sessions are based on the following topic areas:

1. 21st Century Skills (Teamwork, Goal Setting, Problem Solving, Time Management, Motivation)

2. Personal Brand – Professional Identity (Interpersonal Skills, Professional Relationships, Reputation)

3. Workplace Communication (Resilience, Communication Styles, Adaptability, Decision Making)

4. Organisational Values & Workplace Behaviours (Code of Conduct, Attitudes, Vision/Mission/ Values)

5. Personal Development (Facing Challenges, Adding Value, Continuous Professional Development)

Apprentices may also attend 5 additional optional monthly workshops at Crawley College on Tuesdays (9:30am-3:30pm) covering general theoretical underpinnings in Collaboration and Coaching, Working in a Team, Customer Service, Business Awareness and Employment Rights & Responsibilities.

Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths (GCSEs grade C/4+) will need to achieve this level via Functional Skills prior to completion of their Apprenticeship/EPA at Crawley College. We offer termly training sessions (2 hours a week attendance per subject over 15 weeks or an intensive block release, depending on how far away from achievement apprentices are).

Functional Skills Level 2 lessons are delivered weekly at Crawley College for 15 weeks on:

Mondays 9:30 -11:30am (maths) and 12-2pm (English) – January start (tbc)

Ideally, apprentices should already hold Level 2 equivalent English and maths qualifications (eg. GCSEs grade C/4+, Key Skills Level 2 etc)

Expected Duration:

18 Months

Skills Required:

Computer literate.

Flexible with working days and times. E.G holiday cover etc.

Good Telephone manner.

Car driver preferred due to location.

Customer service experience

Qualifications Required:

Ideally you will already have achieved a C/4 grade GCSE in both Maths & English to be considered for this role.

This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship.
