The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a global research and learning organisation for equitable and sustainable change, based in Brighton.

The Humanitarian Learning Centre (HLC) at IDS brings together accessible, operational learning with academic insights to enable more effective humanitarian response. We are currently seeking to recruit a Research Officer to undertake desk and field-based research, data collection and analysis, contribute to publications and other communication methods, and work effectively with project and cluster colleagues.

Applicants will have good knowledge and understanding of current issues and debates in Francophone African politics and society and have a post graduate degree related to this subject area. The successful applicant will have experience of undertaking research in a developing country and willingness to undertake extensive travel within the UK and internationally, sometimes in fragile contexts and areas of active armed conflict. The candidate will need to be fluent in both French and English as most of the research is in Francophone countries (Ivory Coast and Democratic Republic of Congo). Excellent French and English writing analytical synthesis and editing skills including the ability to tailor material for different formats (web, email, etc) and communicate specialist knowledge in non-technical language are also essential.
