Job Title: Health & Safety Officer based at the East Grinstead office 

6 month fixed term contract 

Salary of £27,000 to £30,000 per annum pro rata depending on experience

Job Summary

Support the H&S/Facilities Manager in the day to day management of H&S across the company, ensuring the ILG H&S policy and H&S management procedures are adhered to and remedial action is put in place when necessary.  Actively promoting a safety culture and contributing to the development of ILG’s Health and Safety policies and procedures to ensure always fit for purpose.  


  • Raise the profile of health and safety, work with H&S representatives to engender a culture of awareness and proactive contributions
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, company procedures, policies and guidance notes
  • Maintain the company’s accident and incident records and ensure all reporting requirements are adhered to
  • Implement the risk assessment programme and ensure proper fully documented and timely assessment of risks to health and safety are carried out and implementation of measures and arrangements identified as necessary from the assessments
  • Develop and deliver Health and Safety training including classroom delivery, e-learning and tool box talks
  • Maintain records of H&S related training and ensure renewals undertaken as appropriate.
  • Conduct regular H & S inspections, resolve issues and maintain adequate records
  • Take part in the planning and execution of emergency evacuation drills, working closely with fire wardens to monitor and ensure compliance with fire procedures and fire risk assessments
  • Ensure adequate provision of first-aid coverage and welfare facilities and support
  • Ensure the provision of all relevant protective clothing and equipment
  • Work towards the achievement of ILG’s annual H&S objectives.

Person Specification

  • A recognized H&S qualification – NEBOSH or IOSH
  • Experience of developing and delivering H&S training
  • Experience of undertaking risk assessments and implementation control measures
  • A sound understanding of Fire Management
  • Experience of investigating accidents and incidents and implementing recommendations
  • An understanding of the H&S risks associated with the handling and storage of dangerous goods
  • Experience of formulating, implementing and revising H&S policies and procedures
  • Experience of conducting H&S checks and making recommendations
  • Excellent IT skill, including Word, Powerpoint and Excel
  • Experience in warehousing, logistics or retail (desirable)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and skills
  • Excellent administrative and record keeping skills in order to demonstrate compliance with ILG’s H&S management procedures
  • Works off own initiative, is driven to achieve and demonstrates motivation
  • Able to work as part of a team and demonstrate a flexible approach
  • Ready mobility to travel to all ILG sites (currently based in Surrey and West Sussex but national mobility required in response to the opening of new sites)
  • Flexibility to occasionally work weekend and evenings
