TEACHER OF SOCIOLOGY (Part time, Permanent)

Required to start 1 September 2021

This is a part time, permanent post with an FTE between 0.6087 (14 hours contact time per week) and 0.8043 (18.5 hours contact time per week)

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and skilful teacher of Sociology. The successful candidate will have excellent subject knowledge and a passion for inspiring students of all abilities to exceed expectations.  A willingness to contribute to the teaching of Health and Social Care would be welcome but is not essential.

As a College we are ambitious for our students and we seek to appoint staff who can bring the right blend of flexibility, commitment, energy and vision. We welcome applications from enthusiastic and versatile teachers at any stage in their career.

The BHASVIC Corporation has adopted the conditions of service and salary scales applicable to sixth form colleges. The current full-time salary range for qualified teachers is £25,260 to £41,226 per annum (depending upon experience). This will be pro-rata based on your FTE.

Sociology and Health & Social Care courses are very well established at BHASVIC and are popular with students.  The Department is currently composed of a Head of Department, and six other teachers, four of whom are part time.  Over 350 students follow the OCR Sociology A level course while in Health and Social Care the department delivers the Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate to approximately 60 students. In addition, a small number of second year students work towards AS Sociology in a dedicated group.

As well as teaching the above courses, members of staff promote enrichment trips to conferences, universities, museums and prisons, and hope to restart this provision as soon as COVID restrictions allow. Students are expected to work independently on activities such as reading, research and note making and also to actively engage in group activities. Students are assessed regularly and are supported to set targets to ensure that they achieve their potential.

The team works closely together and teachers support each other both informally and through regular meetings.

Company

We are a successful Sixth Form College, graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012.

About 50% of our students come from Brighton and Hove, but many come from other state and independent schools throughout Sussex. The same variety of backgrounds, cultures and interests that make the Brighton area unique, also makes the College a lively, stimulating place to work.

There are approximately 2500 students on roll, of whom the vast majority (approximately 99%) follow Level 3 courses (mostly AS, A levels or BTECs) with the remainder following ESOL courses. The vast majority of our students are in the 16-19 age range, and following full-time courses. We have a strong local reputation for the academic success of our students and for our focus on individuals’ needs.

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and very much value the individual contribution that each of our staff make to our continuing success.  Our last staff satisfaction survey found that nearly 90% of staff at BHASVIC enjoyed their job.

The College is within walking distance of Brighton town centre, Brighton train station and is on a main bus route.  Please note that there is limited parking on the College campus and parking permits are allocated according to the distance you have to travel to work.

We offer a good package of employee benefits including:

  • A family friendly approach to help achieve a healthy work/life balance.
