We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Database Administrator to join our Technology team in either Haywards Heath, West Sussex, Salford Quays, Manchester, or Guernsey.

As the Lead Database Administrator, you’ll lead, coach and deliver the vision of the Data as a Service function (DaaS). This will ensure the Company’s operational systems and platforms have highly available quality data, resilient, scalable and performant systems, delivered in line with business demand and to agreed service levels.

You’ll be responsible for the day to day delivery of the DasS team. The team are responsible for the timely delivery of quality, reconciled data to a number of internal departments. In order to impact this function, the Lead Database Administrator is pivotal in the development, monitoring and management of complex SQL Server estates.

The Lead Database Administrator ensures the day to day priorities are delivered, providing server, database, database file and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) management including monitoring and maintenance in order to provide performant, cost effective and stable data platforms.

Job responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Customer Service (Technology), this role will ensure First Central Group receive expertise in running, maintaining and deploying databases to support the core line of business platforms:

  • Provide leadership to the DaaS DBA team, including monitoring of internal KPIs and SLAs
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the Data Delivery Service
  • Represent the Data Delivery Service in the wider Managed Service function
  • Regularly audit the effectiveness of the Service and take action where service levels drop below acceptable levels
  • Manage all SQL Server database servers and databases, ensuring configuration, security, availability and replication settings are in line with business requirements
  • Analyse and plan for immediate and future capacity requirements
  • Monitor application and database performance to alleviate bottlenecks and issues to ensure continued delivery of service
  • Monitor and maintain data integrity, index coverage and fragmentation, partitioning
  • Assist the application deployment team by deploying database and ETL changes
  • Engage with Infrastructure, Development, Platform Support, Service desk and Architecture teams to provide Continuous Improvement of service, platform, process and procedures

Skills, knowledge & experience

  • Strong experience in a DBA or similar comparable role and MCSE: Data Platform or equivalent
  • Excellent understanding and experience of Microsoft SQL Server and its technical underpinnings
  • Good understanding and experience of SQL Server development including T-SQL queries, stored procedures, user defined functions, views, indexes etc
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good line management and organisation skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Dispute resolution and change management
  • Good problem-solving skills, identifying root causes and offering solutions
  • Good stakeholder management skills and the ability to influence key decision makers internally
