To assist in maintenance and repairs of all make and models of class 4 vehicles.

The objective of the qualification is to support the learner’s role in the workplace, providing the opportunity to learn and evidence knowledge and skills as part of an apprenticeship.

This qualification has been developed to support learners completing the Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Apprenticeship Standard and covers the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the standard.

  • How vehicle service and repair is impacted by legislative, regulatory and ethical requirements, including health and safety law and environmental procedures
  • The structure of the industry and how the business works from an operational perspective, business targets, the systems and processes that make up the efficient running of a business
  • How to develop positive working relationships and communicate effectively and how to carry out self-evaluation and improve own performance
  • The procedures for the maintenance of tools and the workshop
  • Routine servicing and inspection procedures
  • Steering and suspension geometries; electrical circuit requirements and calculations
  • Construction and operation of vehicle components and systems
  • Common fault types, causes and effects of different types of faults
  • The implications and legal requirements of fitting accessories and carrying out vehicle modifications
  • How to diagnose faults using suitable fault-finding strategies
  • Construction and operation of advanced electrical, braking and suspension systems, engine and transmission systems and engine and gear calculations
  • Vehicle emissions and legal requirements
  • Alternative fuels and hybrid and electric systems

Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (MET) was created from the merger of City College Brighton and Northbrook College Sussex. It is the college for our City and our region and draws on 150 years of heritage, history and experience.

The MET offers a comprehensive range of qualifications for 16 year olds leaving school, full and part time courses for adults, apprenticeships, professional qualifications and university degrees. The MET operates across five campuses in Brighton, Shoreham and Worthing and teaches around 3,500 16-18 year olds, 7,500 adult learners, 1,000 undergraduates and 800 apprentices.
