Sustainability and Environment Manager - 37.5 hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sustainability and Environment Manager to join the award winning Care Without Carbon Team at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of the Sustainability & Environment Team, the post holder will have overall responsibility for waste management, circular economy and climate change adaptation.

In addition, the postholder will support strategy development and engagement within Sussex Community and our partner trusts, and will need to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides sustainability, net zero and carbon management services to NHS and other public sector organisations across the UK. The will have responsibility for delivering project work with and on behalf of other NHS providers within the Sussex ICS and beyond.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Working as part of the Sustainability & Environment Team as environmental
specialist, the post holder will have overall responsibility for waste management, circular economy and Climate change adaptation. Key duties will include:
 To be responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient management of waste and resources across the Trust's operations and coordinating all waste management activities undertaken by the organisation.
 To develop a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the Trust.
 To develop and manage the Trust's Environmental Services Team, providing line management to the Waste Coordinator and managing waste budgets.
 To develop the Trust's Circular Economy workstream.
 To be responsible for delivering year on year cost savings through resource efficiency.

To work alongside the Head of Environmental Services and other senior staff to develop the Trust's sustainability strategy and develop external commercial opportunities. The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that also provides integrated sustainability and carbon management services to NHS and other public sector organisations across the UK. The will have responsibility for delivering project work with and on behalf of other NHS providers within the Sussex Integrated Care System (ICS). They will deputise for the Head of Environmental Services and other senior membersof the team as required.

Person specification

Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
  • Education to post graduate level or equivalent experience in environmental or engineering
  • Detailed working knowledge of UK and EU environmental legislation, in particular relating to climate change and waste management
  • Knowledge of healthcare waste management policies, practices and procedures, including HTM 07-01: Safe Management of Healthcare Waste
  • Understanding of the Waste Hierarchy and its application to designing waste management practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of techniques and processes for waste data management and reporting
  • Detailed understanding of Environmental Management Systems and ISO14001 standard
  • Member of the Institute of Environmental Management Systems and ISO14001 standard, Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM), or British Institute of Facilities Managers


Desirable criteria
  • Training/certification in waste management, recycling, resource efficiency or similar
  • Training in lifecycle assessment and whole life cost modelling techniques


Qualifications and/or Professional Registration
Essential criteria
  • Education to post-graduate level or equivalent in environmental or engineering


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in environmental management and/or sustainability within a complex organisation
  • Proven track record in team leadership and people development
  • Experience in a commercial/business development and/or consultancy project management
