We are pleased to offer a rare opportunity for a teacher to join our nationally renowned, Ofsted Outstanding, well resourced special school, set in the heart of Sussex.

All of our learners are physically disabled and medically complex, many with additional sensory impairments. Our work is integrated with that of a very large specialist NHS clinical and medical team on site, making it an inspiring place for enthusiastic teachers to practise and to learn.

We welcome applications from teachers who already have a background in special educational needs, but we also welcome those who do not, but who are able to demonstrate through the recruitment process that they eager to learn.

Teachers at Chailey Heritage School are expected to:

  • Engage with and promote the school’s Vision;
  • Be excellent practitioners and meet Chailey Heritage School’s Teacher Standards;
  • Have a sound knowledge of children’s development and learning;
  • Engage in effective, sustained and relevant professional development;
  • Work together effectively in class, department and whole-school teams, and as part of the wider Foundation.
  • Promote the welfare of children and young adults through safeguarding.

As a class teacher, to be responsible for the education and well-being of a group of pupils with physical disabilities, complex communication, sensory, medical and cognitive difficulties.

You will:

  • In partnership with your department team, plan and teach according to the CHILD Curriculum which is based on the individual profiles of each pupil, aiming for all pupils to achieve their best and for them to make at least good progress;
  • Be responsible for collating clear and up-to-date evidence of learner progress.
  • Maintain records of the support and interventions provided for students and the impact of these on their progress and attainment.
  • Lead meetings with other professionals reviewing pupil progress.
  • Understand the everyday health care needs of the children in your class to ensure that they are met within the school day by working in close liaison with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead a large team of teaching assistants, including their line management and school appraisal processes, and supporting them to develop their SEN skills.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with parents/carers and a team of multi-disciplinary staff;
  • Provide reports for parents, governors and external agencies (as required), completing all documentation to required professional standards.
