We have opportunities for up to 4 motivated individuals to undertake Apprenticeships with Wealden District Council, learning and training alongside experienced staff.  You will have a supervisor in the workplace to support you and undertake qualifications with East Sussex College.

There are opportunities available to begin your apprenticeship in one of the following service areas. 

•    Human Resources
•    Building Control
•    Legal Services
•    Planning & Environmental Services

What will you be doing? 

•    You will shadow, learn from and provide administrative support to a team of officers within the Council

•    You will be responsible for project work, ensuring operational deadlines are met

What do you need? 

•    We welcome applications from anyone living in the local area who is 16 or over and not in full time education.  

•    You must already hold GCSE/A Level English and maths qualifications at grade 4/ C+) OR achieve Functional Skills level 2 as part of the Apprenticeship and meet the essential criteria as set out in the Person Specification (see Wealden District Council website for this)

Training Package: Every new starter at Wealden is given a full induction to help familiarise them with the organisation and the working environment. All apprentices are provided with a package of training that includes relevant IT skills, customer service skills, health & safety and equalities training, and preparing for job applications and interviews. You will be assigned a supervisor who is an experienced member of staff and who will support you throughout the apprenticeship to learn job-specific skills. They will discuss any individual training needs you may have and these will be provided as far as possible. Special Conditions: A travel allowance up to a maximum of £2000 per annum towards the cost of transportation to and from the work place, may be payable. This is to ensure that the scheme is viable to all, including the District’s most rural residents

Requirements and prospects

•Good written and oral communication skills. · Confidence to speak on the phone and respond to members of the public. · Ability to check for accuracy and give attention to detail. · Ability to think creatively with regard to problem solving. · Good organisational skills, able to organise self to work to deadlines and meet service standards. · Interest in local Government and knowledge of local authority functions. · Ability to research, interpret and convey complex information and processes using appropriate data sources with regard to national legislation. · Good numerical skills to analyse statistical information.

Knowledge and/or experience of using computers and the Internet. · Understanding that you will be working in a customer focused service. · Knowledge and/or experience of using MS Word & Excel. · Prior experience of an administrative working environment

Future prospects

There may be the opportunity to apply for another post at Wealden District Council on completion of the Apprenticeship either as a progression to another Apprenticeship or to a permanent role depending on the organisational needs at that time.

The Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship will be delivered by East Sussex College.

The Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship has been designed to develop an employee’s skills, knowledge and behaviours in a broad range of areas relevant to their role as an administrator. Employees on this apprenticeship programme will be expected to show initiative, manage priorities and their own time, problem-solve and make decisions while delivering their responsibilities efficiently and with integrity – showing a positive attitude. The role involves demonstrating strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and adopting a proactive approach to developing skills. Running a work based project is required as part of this apprenticeship.  

Learners will study the following topics:

• Using IT systems to write emails, create proposals and produce spreadsheets

• Maintaining records and files

• How to build positive working relationships

• Communications skills

• Resource planning

• Project management techniques

Qualifications/Certification gained on completion:

  • Apprenticeship Certificate (Pass or Distinction)
  • Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Business Administration (optional)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills English and Maths (equivalent to GCSE grade A-C or level 9-4) unless exempt

Progression & Professional Recognition:

The administration role may be a gateway to further career opportunities, such as management or senior support roles. Higher apprenticeship learning programmes are available for consideration. 

Typical Duration:  12 – 18 months 

Delivery: 100% Work based (No need to attend college, an Assessor will visit Apprentices in the workplace. Eastbourne campus is close by if Apprentices wish to use it's facilities)

Entry Criteria: Set by the employer and dependent on job responsibilities. All learners will be required to complete an English and Maths initial assessment prior to the start of the apprenticeship

Level: 3 (Advanced)

End Point Assessment: Yes.  Knowledge Test, Portfolio Based Interview, Project Presentation.
