TEACHER OF MATHS (Maternity Cover)

Required to start March 2022

Full time or Part time available, Fixed term to cover a maternity leave until December 2022

We are one of the top-performing colleges in the country, situated in the cosmopolitan seaside city of Brighton & Hove. Working here offers the combination of both a wonderful place to work and a great city in which to live. Our students and staff are colourful, aspirational and hard-working – which is perhaps why 96% of employees would “recommend BHASVIC as a good place to work” and many of our students go on to Higher Education.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and skilful teacher to contribute to the teaching of A level and GCSE. We welcome applicants either interested in a full time or part time basis, please specify your preference (number of hours -FTE) in your cover letter. This post is fixed term to cover a member of staff on maternity leave from March 2022 until approximately December 2022 or the return of the current post holder if earlier. There is a possibility that a permanent position might become available in the event of further staffing changes in September 2022.

The Maths Department

The Maths department is a large, innovative and dynamic team of staff, currently comprising nine full-time teachers and eight part-time teachers.  One of our full-time teachers is also a Head of Faculty and another co-ordinates the college’s “Flourish” project to support Widening Participation students and also teaches a ‘Level One qualification’ in British Sign Language. Teachers are expected to undertake course leadership roles as an integral part of their teaching commitment e.g. A1 Single Maths, GCSE Maths etc.

Maths is largely accommodated in nine dedicated classrooms, each with an interactive whiteboard.  In addition, there is a resource base in which subject extensions (drop-in workshops) are held. Student outcomes in the BHASVIC Maths department are outstanding with well over 80% of single maths students and well over 90% of further maths students achieving A*-B grades each year.  In terms of value added, the overwhelming majority of its courses have been consistently operating at ALPS 2 level (above the 90th percentile of Maths providers in the UK) in recent years. We have extremely high standards for all our students and aim to develop their knowledge, skills and experience in a stimulating and varied learning environment.  We look to exploit diverse strategies of teaching, learning, motivation and tracking so that all students are able to access the understanding and knowledge needed to prepare them effectively for examination and beyond.

The BHASVIC Corporation has adopted the conditions of service and salary scales applicable to sixth form colleges. The current full-time salary range for qualified teachers is £25,826 to £42,149 per annum (depending upon experience). This will be pro-rata depending on your FTE if a part time contract is offered.

Company

We are a successful Sixth Form College, graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012.

About 50% of our students come from Brighton and Hove, but many come from other state and independent schools throughout Sussex. The same variety of backgrounds, cultures and interests that make the Brighton area unique, also makes the College a lively, stimulating place to work.

There are approximately 2500 students on roll, of whom the vast majority (approximately 99%) follow Level 3 courses (mostly AS, A levels or BTECs) with the remainder following ESOL courses. The vast majority of our students are in the 16-19 age range, and following full-time courses. We have a strong local reputation for the academic success of our students and for our focus on individuals’ needs.

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and very much value the individual contribution that each of our staff make to our continuing success.  Our last staff satisfaction survey found that nearly 90% of staff at BHASVIC enjoyed their job.

The College is within walking distance of Brighton town centre, Brighton train station and is on a main bus route.  Please note that there is limited parking on the College campus and parking permits are allocated according to the distance you have to travel to work.
