Job overview

Research Assistants (Implementation) x 2 posts are sought for the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS). These are newly created roles based within the ARC KSS Operations and Implementation functions. The posts will support the ARC KSS Implementation Strategy to implement high quality applied health and social care research that meets the needs of the region's populations and health & social care systems.

The roles offer an exciting opportunity for dynamic and flexible research assistants to support the four ARC KSS Implementation Managers in core functions such as administration, engagement and evaluation plus bespoke pieces of work to deliver the ARC KSS Implementation Strategy across its research themes. The roles would suit graduates or equivalent who are interested in how applied research is implemented into practice across health & social care provision, impacts the wider national health strategies and the public and communities.

The post holders will work across the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region and supra regionally in collaboration with ARC KSS colleagues, health & social care providers, the public and communities and other stakeholders.

The roles total 1.4 wte, 1 year-fixed term contracts, in the first instance (due to external renewable funding conditions). This can be one full time post and one part time post of 2 days per week, or 2 part time posts, depending on applications received.

Main duties of the job

The role offers opportunities for a dynamic and flexible research assistant to support the four Implementation Managers in core functions such as administration, engagement and evaluation plus bespoke work to deliver the Implementation Strategy. The role would suit graduates or equivalent who are interested in how applied research is implemented into practice and impact on wider national health strategy.

The post will support a regional research infrastructure and therefore in addition to office-based tasks, candidates will also need to demonstrate their ability to travel efficiently across the region and potentially nationally. This includes working flexibly, eg, at different Trust and collaborator's offices, supporting meetings at external venues, home working. Some meetings/events will continue to be facilitated virtually and therefore it is essential that post holders can confidently maximise the use of virtual platforms.

Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is the host Trust for the ARC KSS. A key requirement of the role is the ability to work across organisational structures/processes of the main ARC KSS employers including host Trust, HEI's and AHSN in addition to the ARC's wider collaborators including health & social care providers, public and communities and other regional/national stakeholders.

The contractual base is Grove House, Crowborough, East Sussex. Some staff are currently working flexibly in response to the pandemicbut the emerging expectation is that post holders will return to working at their contractual base for part of the week. However, please do not let your proximity to this site deter you from applying as there are options to work flexibly in line with the Trust policies. As these posts cover regional activity they may suit people living in another county within the region ie Kent or Surrey in addition to Sussex.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The core tasks for the role includes focusing on identified priorities, objectives and projects including:
  • Supporting senior members of the team to deliver of digital and face-to-face events
  • Administration support (setting up meetings, and note taking, maintaining logs).
  • Support activities arising from Communities of Practice (mapping, research activities).
  • Assist with implementation research activities including:
    • Transcript analysis (using qualitative methodologies)
    • Descriptive quantitative analysis
    • Setting up/evaluating surveys
    • Content analysis (qualitative and quantitative)
    • Setting up/evaluating descriptive surveys
  • Assist with implementation element of funding applications.
  • Assist with communications activities relating to dissemination and implementation of outputs.
  • Assist with public and community involvement.
  • Coordinate the quarterly Implementation Strategy Group.
  • Identify and address own professional development and support needs.
  • Actively participate in the Trust supervision and appraisal processes.
  • Travel pan and supra-regionally in an efficient manner.
  • Use of virtual platforms such as Zoom, Skype and MS Teams.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent.

Desirable criteria
  • Further post graduate training in relevant area of professional psychology, health & social care practice, and / or research design and analysis

Knowledge / Experience
Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of working on research projects either within an academic, clinical or other provider setting
  • Confident use of virtual platforms such as Zoom, GoTo and MS Teams to host meetings/events
  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Knowledge of databases, research skills and methodologies including qualitavie/quantitative, setting up and evaluating surveys
  • Knowledge of the aims and objectives of the ARC KSS
  • Understanding of applied health & social care research and implementation of evidence into front line services

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with public and communities
  • Experience working with senior academics
  • Experience working with health & social care providers and clinicians

Skills / Personal Attributes
Essential criteria
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the ARC KSS.
  • Willingness to undertake training if required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel efficiently throughout Kent, Surrey and Sussex and nationally, at times.
  • To be able to communicate effectively under pressure and maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times
