Job overview

To provide clinical leadership, specialist psychological therapy and supervision of psychological therapists within the Primary Care Network (PCN) Community Teams working in north- and mid-West Sussex. The psychological provision supports patients with concurrent long term physical health conditions and depression and/or anxiety disorders working in multi-disciplinary teams to provide holistic healthcare. This post will involve supervision of the psychologists and act as liaison with the Community Teams. The role involves liaison with key stakeholders, contributing to service development and evaluation, and supporting the provision of psychological therapy across six PCN Community Teams to meet KPI's and achieve excellent clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.

In addition to offering specialist psychological interventions, the post holder will work closely with operational leads and within multidisciplinary healthcare teams to offer training, consultation and supervision to non-mental health staff to improve outcomes for patients. This is an exciting innovative role for someone who is confident in working independently and in newly developing services.

Main duties of the job

You'll provide specialist psychological assessments of clients with long term health conditions as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client's mental health problems as well as providing specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients' formulation, diagnosis, and treatment plan.

To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the post holder's professional and service manager.

To support the development of the services within the locality, liaise with key stakeholders, and provide strong clinical leadership to the staff within the service

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To provide clinical leadership, specialist psychological therapy and supervision of psychological therapists within the Primary Care Network (PCN) Community Teams working in north- and mid-West Sussex. The PCN Community Teams work across East Grinstead, Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex and the role will require some travel to these areas and wider West Sussex.

The post holder will be required to utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the service.

The post holder will also be involved in networking with other relevant services and offering training and consultation with regards to psychological aspects of long-term conditions where appropriate.

To provide regular clinical supervision to staff's psychological work and other senior professional colleagues, as appropriate.

To provide professional and clinical supervision of other qualified and trainee psychology professionals.

To offer professional teaching sessions to a range of staff, as well as training and supervision.

To attend CPD events within the wider psychological therapies service within the Trust, and to contribute to internal CPD/ peer learning events as appropriate .

To provide psychological advice, consultation and training to staff working with patients with long term health conditions across a range of agencies and settings, where appropriate, including primary and secondary care.

To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the team's operational policies and services, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit.

To provide regular audits with regards to the KPI's for the service.

To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.

To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and issues in relation to both the specific client group and mental health.

To undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.

To undertake project management, including complex audit and service evaluation, with colleagues to help develop service provision.

To familiarise yourself with, and to comply with, the Trust's requirements on research governance.

To advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.

The post holder will engage in relevant computer and IT training as required.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that those psychological therapists who they are responsible for/supervise engage in relevant computer and IT training as required and will input and maintain, appropriate computer and manual clinical records and statistical data.

To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychological therapies within the service and the Trust, by continuing to develop the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal, and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology, CBT, and related disciplines.

To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data (IAPTUS) entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the HCPC, British Psychological Society / BABCP or other governing bodies and Trust policies and procedures.

To manage the clinical workloads of psychological staff within the framework of the Trust's policies and procedures.

The post holder will input and maintain, appropriate computer and manual clinical records and statistical data and provide this to the Clinical Service Manager/ Clinical Lead when necessary.

To be involved, as appropriate, in the recruitment of psychological therapy staff to the service.

Person specification

Qualifications and/or Professional Registration
Essential criteria
  • BABCP accredited CBT Therapist or counselling/clinical psychologist
  • Demonstrate further specialist training.
  • Evidence of study and clinical practice in clinical health psychology/working with patients with long term medical conditions.
  • Pre/post qualification training/ CPD in health related psychological interventions.


Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate research experience and relevant skills.
  • Training and skills in research and audit methodology, staff training and consultation.


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a range of care settings including, outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Demonstrate further specialist experience of working in a physical healthcare setting and within a multidisciplinary team setting.
  • Significant experience of working with patients with long term health conditions (such as diabetes, COPD or cardiac conditions) and co-morbid psychological problems.
  • Experience of the application of psychology to the different cultural contexts.
  • Experience of teaching, training and supervision as B8a or in a senior capacity.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing waiting lists and supporting achievement of KPIs within a team.


Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • The use of complex methods of psychological assessment and intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • High level knowledge of the theory of practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies one of which must be CBT.
  • Able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Able to provide consultations to both professionals and non- professional groups.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, design and complex data analysis as practised within the fields of psychology.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development relating to this post.
  • Specialist skills in the application and supervision of application of CBT to adults including an IAPT recognised CBT supervision qualification.


Desirable criteria
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychological therapy personnel.
  • Knowledge of legislation, research, and national guidance in in relation to management of mental health within physical health care settings.
  • Knowledge of Behavioural Change Models including motivational interviewing.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (such as personality disorder, dual diagnoses, and people with additional disabilities)

Essential criteria
  • Ability to teach and train others using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
  • Experience of working within a multi-cultural framework and applying equal opportunities legislation to clinical practice.
  • Ability to travel to all sites across the locality (public transport is not available to all destinations). If not a car owner/driver, please state how you will travel.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, which may include before 9am and evening work (core hours are Mon-Fri 0900-1700).
