Welcome from our Chief Executive

Our organisation is expanding and we're looking for people with the right values, skills and/or potential to join us. We need people with energy, expertise, enthusiasm to help us provide the very best possible specialist NHS mental health and learning disability care. This involves helping us achieve our strategy to improve the quality of life for the communities we serve through People, Prevention and Partnerships.

So what can we offer you in return?

We're an organisation which puts people first. We'll do everything possible to help you feel respected, valued and included. We'll help you learn, acquire new skills and gain further experience to support your career development. And we'll provide the opportunity for you to bring your fresh ideas to work about how we can do things differently and continue improving.

You will also be joining a health and care system committed to working together to do the best we can for the communities we serve. Above all, at Sussex Partnership you'll have the chance to make a difference to the lives of the patients, carers and families across our communities.

If you like the sound of that, then come and join our team.

Job overview

Are you neurodivergent and motivated to grow peer participation within the Neurodevelopmental service? Are you proud of your neurodivergent identity and of the wider neurodivergent community? Do you feel you can support increased visibility and representation of your peers, both as service users and service influencers?

The Neurodevelopmental Service (including TCAT) is excited to recruit our first Participation Lead (band 6). The role will be challenging, stimulating and each day as diverse as the community you will represent.

Main duties of the job

You will enjoy seeking out opportunities for meaningful peer involvement within our service, and also the bigger Trust, and supporting neurodivergent people to engage, contribute, and participate. This is an exciting time of change for our service and it is essential that we understand from neurodivergent people what actually matters to them. It is realistic to say that services are still learning about neurodiversity so you should have a collaborative attitude, and a willingness to work in partnership with neurotypical colleagues and systems - thereby you will inspire sustainable change that will make a real difference to your neurodivergent peers.

Working for our organisation

Who are we?

The Neurodevelopmental Service offers diagnostic assessment and brief post-diagnostic support for adults living in Sussex. We are a multi-disciplinary team who are committed to providing an inclusive service that celebrates neurodiversity - we have autistic peer support workers and also a lot of lived experience within the team. We benefit from close partnerships with experts by experience and also our Trust Neurodivergent staff network and dedicated staff clinic.

The Transforming Care Autism Team offers specialist assessment and advice to autistic people and their supporters. Autistic people who are likely to be eligible for TCAT intervention have usually had significant experience of acute and urgent care services so it is especially important that their voices are heard.

The NDS (including TCAT) are engaged in conversations with many different stakeholders so the reach of potential change and increased inclusivity is considerable. You should therefore expect to connect with many different people from different backgrounds / roles. We are keen to lead the way in communication that is equal, reciprocal and authentic, regardless of neurotype, so we would be delighted to think about how we can support your own voice as a neurodivergent individual. We understand that neurotypical systems do not always welcome neurodivergent participation and we want to begin to challenge and change this.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As this is a new role, it is difficult to describe a typical day. To a certain extent, the role will develop once the successful applicant is in post and you should expect this and welcome this opportunity. You will be supported by service leaders and enjoy giving and receiving feedback. We understand that you may have particular needs in terms of information about the role and expectations and routines and we are happy to support you to feel confident that you are doing a great job for neurodivergent service users. We will encourage you to have a Wellness at Work plan - we want you to feel comfortable to talk about your own neurodiversity.

Full training and induction will be provided as well as supervision and other support.

There is likely to be a significant degree of lone-working and we can consider flexible hours and also possible job-share.

The Trust works with adult and children's social care to ensure that the integrated service has systems in place to equip staff and bank workers with the knowledge and skills to recognize abuse, and take action to safeguard and protect vulnerable adults and children and young people. It is expected that all staff and bank workers familiarise themselves with the appropriate structures and policies and with the Sussex child protection and safeguarding procedures and the Sussex multi-agency policy and procedures for safeguarding vulnerable adults and undertake the relevant essential training and further training appropriate to their role.

Successful candidates are normally offered salaries at the bottom of the relevant salary range. However, where previous or equivalent NHS experience in a similar role can be demonstrated and evidenced, this may be taken into consideration when setting the starting salary.
