Are you looking for an exciting new challenge and chance to expand your knowledge and skills whilst developing a new role in our Occupational Health Team?

We are currently looking for an experienced senior specialist community public health nurse (SCPHN - OHN) to work within the Occupational Health Department for Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust as a Practice Development Nurse.

As part of NHS England's Growing Occupational Health Vision, our Occupational Health service is undergoing a period of significant change focused on improving the health and wellbeing of our staff, so now is a fantastic time to join us. To help us achieve our aims, we are looking for a highly motivated, well organised individual who is able to communicate across a wide group of individuals and be a willing change agent.

Our ideal candidate will have experience of teaching, mentoring and managing a clinical team, be able to demonstrate excellent assessment and clinical decision-making skills, and be committed to delivering high-quality care.

Main duties of the job

Working alongside our multidisciplinary team, maintaining your professional specialist nursing skills you will work autonomously providing all aspects of specialist OH services delivering care with compassion.

A significant part of this varied and dynamic role will be to lead and support the development of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to provide and maintain a competent workforce that is responsive to our new ways of working.

Our MDT currently comprises a range of health professions: Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Clinical Psychology, OH Medical Practitioner, supported by our excellent Administrative Team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The key responsibilities of this role include:
  • The post holder will have a lead role in the development and provision of practice education standards within the Occupational Health Multi-disciplinary Team.
  • The post holder will provide mentorship and work-based learning facilitation.
  • Support the development of enhanced clinical skills ensuring access to appropriate development to maintain a competent workforce.
  • Clinical leadership and nursing advice to the service, providing best practice.
  • Developing clinical governance through the support, monitoring, and implementation of enhanced clinical standards and learning within the clinical services.
  • The post holder will be a qualified specialist Occupational Health practitioner with
  • a relevant post-graduate certificate in education (or equivalent) or commitment to undertaking a relevant course in education.
  • Work as an innovator capable of leading changes in clinical practice and pioneering new frameworks to support practice and increase the skills and confidence of practitioners, enhancing OH .
  • Act as a change agent, using skills that will motivate and reassure staff through negotiation and training to facilitate the change process.

Person specification

Qualifications and/or professional registration
Essential criteria
  • Registered level 1 Nurse
  • Post basic education and training equivalent to a higher university degree
  • Minimum of 5 years' post-registration experience across range of service areas
  • Experience of Case management including complex case management
  • Experience in managing staff and or specific areas of responsibility
  • Training/mentorship experience including knowledge of teaching techniques and ability to apply these in practice and demonstrate an understanding of learner needs
  • Involvement in audit or evaluation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including difficult conversatins, managing conflict, influencing and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrate a high level of understanding of self, able to identify personal limitations and show openness to address them; commitment to develop and improve own performance


Desirable criteria
  • ENB 998/Mentor at level 5 or Level 6
  • Experience working within NHS Occupational Health department
  • Evidence of further professional development within the field of Occupational Health and Safety
  • Risk management experience
  • Accredited specialist public health community nurse (OH) to Degree level on part 3 of NMC register -(if not yet held, working towards or willingness to complete.)
  • Post-graduate Diploma or MSc in Occupational Health or relevant subject (if not yet held, working towards or willingness to complete.)


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 5 years' post-registration experience across range of service areas
  • Experience of Case management including complex case management
  • Experience in managing staff and or specific areas of responsibility


Desirable criteria
  • Experience working within NHS Occupational Health department
