HEAD OF GUIDANCE (full-time, full year)

Required to start from 1 August 2022 or as soon as possible, thereafter.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, dynamic and suitably experienced person to lead, manage and quality assure the college’s Guidance provision within our newly re-organised Student Support, Experience and Guidance (SSEG) department. This is a new role, heading up a team of Guidance Managers: the focus of this team is to help students achieve on their study programmes and to support academic progress throughout the learner journey, challenging all forms of disadvantage to promote positive achievement and retention for all.

We are looking for someone who is able to work collaboratively, to develop a vision of specialised post-16 Guidance and Academic support, leading with Guidance/Pastoral expertise across a broad range of college teams, functions and processes and working closely with curriculum departments to promote positive personal development, student wellbeing, behaviour and attitudes.

You will line manage a team of Guidance Managers, supervising casework and ensuring high quality responsiveness and consistency in processes followed; including assisting with more complex complaints and oversight of cross-college improvement targets linked to retaining students and maximising Guided Learning Hours. You will also have your own cohort of Personal Tutors and student caseload.

You will be a member of the Student Support and Experience Leadership team (SSELT) to steer strategic and operational direction of the area; and you will also be a lead member of the frontline safeguarding team: undertaking emergency safeguarding and child protection duties where needed for students in crisis, at risk or in need of urgent support.

This is a permanent, full-time post working 37 hours per week. The starting salary is £40,265 per annum which will rise to £43,207 per annum over four years subject to satisfactory performance. This salary is within Grade 9 of the support staff pay spine. Holiday entitlement is 29 days per annum, the majority of which will normally be taken outside usual term time. This entitlement rises to 34 days after five years’ service.

Daily start and end times are negotiable and to be agreed within the team, between the hours of 8.00am and 5.30pm.  From time to time these hours will vary in response to the needs of the college and will include some evening work (for example, parents’ evenings, school visits and open evenings); as well as a requirement to be available at certain key dates within the year (for example, Results Days, Moving On Days, Welcome Days etc.).

Company

We are a successful Sixth Form College, graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012.

About 50% of our students come from Brighton and Hove, but many come from other state and independent schools throughout Sussex. The same variety of backgrounds, cultures and interests that make the Brighton area unique, also makes the College a lively, stimulating place to work.

There are approximately 2500 students on roll, of whom the vast majority (approximately 99%) follow Level 3 courses (mostly AS, A levels or BTECs) with the remainder following ESOL courses. The vast majority of our students are in the 16-19 age range, and following full-time courses. We have a strong local reputation for the academic success of our students and for our focus on individuals’ needs.

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and very much value the individual contribution that each of our staff make to our continuing success.  Our last staff satisfaction survey found that nearly 90% of staff at BHASVIC enjoyed their job.

The College is within walking distance of Brighton town centre, Brighton train station and is on a main bus route.  Please note that there is limited parking on the College campus and parking permits are allocated according to the distance you have to travel to work.
