Primary Purpose of the Role:

To carry out general engineering tasks as required by the business. This will Mainly involve the following:

  • Designing maritime electrical system for safety and reliability, in accordance to regulatory and military standards.
  • Developing new designs as well as maintain and upgrading existing in-service installs. 
  • With the support of other members of the team, carry out more specialised electrical design tasks associated with design for the sub sea environment.
  • Develop new designs as well as maintain and upgrading existing in-service installs. 
  • Actively make steps to learn from other members of the Thales family.
  • Share their knowledge and experience with other members of the team.

Principal Relationships:

  • Reporting to the Portfolio Hardware Engineering Manager
  • Communication within the team to share experience both ways to learn from others and develop experience.
  • To communicate progress and issues with the Work Package / Project Manager for the allocated tasks. Keeping Team Leader informed of challenges, successes and issues.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

The role may include, but not be limited to the following activities:

  • To develop and agree development plans with the team leader and then take responsibility for following the plan, requesting assistance as needed.
  • Delivery of Electrical aspects of maritime system design and ensure it complies with the relevant legislation.
  • Design and Integration of complex electrical and electronic systems, utilising COTS MIL-COTS and electronic automation product solutions. Defining the interfaces with others constructively and mechanically.
  • Work collaboratively with  other engineering disciplines, production and procurement to produce cost effective, easy to manufacture design solutions.
  • Provide support to the preparation of detailed estimates and bids.
  • Ensure that the technical requirements produced at product and sub-system levels meet the customers’ requirements and are able to be verified and validated successfully. Provide Trials and integration support as required.
  • Design and develop relevant technical documentation including test specification and proof of design documentation. 
  • All design and installs require safety testing, certifying EMC compliance. The Engineers will be expected produce or help with UKCA and CE approvals and have previous experience in producing the necessary documentation.

Essential

  • General Electrical / Electronic Engineering Skills and ability.
  • General understanding of Engineering Development lifecycles.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Proactive “can-do” mentality
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Must have Microsoft Office suite experience
  • The individual will be expected to demonstrate a level of autonomy.
  • A logical approach to problem solving is required.

Desirable

  • Designing to meet EMC requirements.
  • Interconnection Design.
  • Power supply design experience.

Experience:

Essential

  • Strong demonstrated experience of Electrical / Electronic Design Roles including at least a subset of the following:
    • Packaging of electronics and associated cabling.
    • Designing for platform installation. Ship / submarine. 
    • Providing support to the preparation of design requirements.
    • Preparation of system and sub system production test specs.

Desirable

  • Understanding of Naval platforms.
  • The key areas of design undertaken for which previous experience would be beneficial will include: -
    • The design of sonar assemblies and equipment for the sub-sea environment.
    • The design deployment systems
    • Design and development of Hardware Engineering Products.
    • Design / specification of electronic packaging solutions.
    • Experience of designing to meet CE marking requirements
    • Experience of designing to meet EMC requirements.
    • Experience of low voltage directive.
    • Interconnection design.

Qualifications:

Essential

  •  Degree in relevant discipline

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent
