Job overview

We have an exciting opportunities for a Band 5 or Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our supportive and friendly Coastal teams based in Worthing. You will be part of a large dynamic and innovative Adult Community SLT Service across the whole Trust and have opportunities to develop your clinical skills with support from both specialist and advanced practitioners.

The post holder will manage a varied community caseload, with adults presenting with both progressive and non-progressive conditions and a range of communication and swallowing difficulties. We will support newly qualified and Band 5 therapists through dysphagia competencies and provide regular clinical supervision and development opportunities in clinical skills as well as in other areas such as research and Trust wide projects and initiatives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Our service manages a varied caseload of adult acquired conditions presenting with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties. We see patients in their own homes, in nursing homes and in outpatient clinics as well as in intermediate care units and on the stroke ward at Crawley Hospital and work to a blended model of face-to-face assessment and therapy and remote consultations via video and telephone.

We offer student placements as well as training to inpatient settings, work closely with our multidisciplinary team colleagues and ensure our involvement and representation as part of the Trust's Specialist Services in many Trust wide projects and developments.

We seek to provide a high quality, responsive and evidence-based service and we actively encourage personal and professional development of clinical, analytical, research and leadership skills.

Person specification

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • Degree (or recognised equivalent) in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered member RCSLT and HCPC
  • Postgraduate and experiential training in relevant areas


Desirable criteria
  • Membership of relevant CEN(s)


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Band 5: Relevant experience of working with adults with acquired communication and/or swallowing difficulties at undergraduate/ post graduate level
  • Band 5: Experience of multidisciplinary working within acute and/or community settings, including understanding of the roles of other professionals relevant to caseload
  • Band 6: Min 2 years post-graduation in clinical specialism (s) in acquired adult disorders
  • Band 6: Post basic training and experience in dysphagia
  • Band 6: Participation in student placements
  • Band 6: Participation in provision of training to others


Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • Band 5: Knowledge of a range of assessment tools relevant to the patient group (acquired communication and swallowing disorders)
  • Band 5: Evidenced based knowledge of a wide variety of treatment techniques and strategies relevant to the caseload (adult acquired communication and swallowing disorders)
  • Band 5: Awareness of therapy outcome measures relevant to the client group
  • Band 6: Specialist clinician, able to demonstrate credibility, diagnostic skills and in depth knowledge of appropriate assessment and management
  • Band 6: Demonstrates ability to manage caseload independently
  • Band 6: Ability to monitor standards of practice, policies and protocols in accordance with clinical governance strategy
