Field Engineer

Are you looking for a challenging new Field Engineer opportunity ? We are looking for great people who can help us redefine what's possible for our Capital Delivery team.

As part of our 'Grow with Gatwick' initiative you'll be provided with the necessary development to ensure you're able to Grow with Gatwick.

The Construction Department comprises several programme and project teams, along with technical support functions and is accountable for the delivery of the airport CIP and strategic growth over the next 5 years, encompassing projects across the campus to deliver fit for purpose critical infrastructure .

What is the role?

Gatwick Airport is changing at an outstanding pace and this is an exciting opportunity for a Field Engineer to be part of a high performing team building Gatwick's future infrastructure.

The Field Engineer will play a key role in Gatwick's future, supporting Project Managers in the monitoring of construction related activity across a large single or multiple smaller projects in a live airport operational environment.

What will you do?

Deliver regular safety engagement to support the development and maintenance of a culture of world class health, safety, and environmental standards to deliver the highest levels of health, safety and environmental performance achievable.

Support the Project Engineer with buildability input in the design stage of the project to ensure safety in design and comply with CDM requirements.

Review contractor Construction, Design & Management (CDM) and Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) submittals (including construction phase plans, risk assessments, method statements and work permits) and monitor compliance against accepted plans.

Review contractor Quality and Commissioning submittals (including Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) and Daily Reports), reviewing quality and verifying content prior to submission to Project Manager(s).

Support Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s) in providing responses to Requests for Information (RFI), Non Conformance Reports (NCR) and Field Change Documents as required, and ensure that quality issues, including defects are processed and closed out in a timely manner.

Contribute to Front End Loading (FEL) design sessions including Business Engineering Alignment Meetings (BEAMs) to evaluate design in terms of feasibility and risk.

Inspect work within relevant discipline to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, GAL standards and statutory regulations. Produce engineering solutions/field sketches to resolve site based queries, in conjunction with the Project Engineer(s).

Coordinate with GAL electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure all works are installed according to accepted design and all isolations and energisation of power supplies and mechanical plant are carried out by qualified and approved person as per GAL standards and operating procedures.

Works with the Project Engineer to deliver effective commissioning and handover of projects through review of as-built information, ensuring quality and completeness in what is delivered against contractual requirements.

Do you have what we are looking for?
  • Qualified to Higher National Certificate (HNC) level or equivalent in construction management or engineering related discipline. Prior experience may be suitable replacement in lieu of education/qualification.
  • Experience as a Field Engineer or equivalent on large infrastructure project or multi-year programmes of engineering works with a value typically in excess of £10m in a relevant industry.
  • Good understanding of the importance of controlling and managing the project close out and handover process, with an associated understanding of Building Control requirements.
  • Good understanding of Health Safety & Environmental issues associated with the Construction industry. Good experience of addressing Health Safety & Environmental issues associated with the Construction industry highly desirable.
  • Good practical problem solving skills.
  • Good understanding of construction techniques & constructability issues.
  • Good understanding of monitoring the management of quality.
  • Good working knowledge of basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project etc.)
  • Knowledge and understanding of NEC suite of contracts desirable. Experience of preparation of Project Manager Instructions and responses to Contractor Claims desirable.
  • Personal resilience and the ability to manage ambiguity
  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
  • Good understanding of Airport Operational Readiness (AOR) of Airport Facilities desirable.
