CHAIR or CO CHAIR DESIGNATE (Voluntary)

Required to start as Governor from March 2023 and as Chair/Co-Chair from August 2023

BHASVIC is a top performing sixth form college which aims to transform lives through learning and has been rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. We strive to build a contemporary, creative learning culture which has delivered a sustained track record of excellent educational outcomes. We have approximately 3400 full-time 16-19 students on roll, of whom the vast majority (approximately 99%) follow level 3 courses (mostly A levels and/or single BTECs). We also have approximately 40 students each year studying English as a Second Language with us. We have a strong local and national reputation for the academic success of our students and for our focus on individuals' needs.

We are currently seeking a Chair or Co Chair Designate to lead the Board of Governors. Our Governors comprise individuals from business, the local community, Staff, Students and Parents and together the Governing Body sets the strategic direction and culture for the College and ensures that good governance is at the heart of College activity.

We have an interested and capable party as Co-Chair so would be interested in hearing from prospective candidates to fill the other half of this role as well as applicants who could fulfil the full criteria. For those applying for a Co-Chair position we would be looking for a least one of the following competencies as these have been identified as complementary to that of the other interested party:

  • Education experience (FE experience desirable but not essential)   Finance experience (FE desirable but not essential)  Governance

The successful candidate would be initially appointed as a Governor and Chair/Co-Chair Designate, to allow for a thorough induction by shadowing the present Chair and (if applicable) to allow time to meet and working with Co-Chair to ensure compatibility, before recommendation for appointment by the Governing Body to the role of Chair/Co-Chair is made.

The role of Chair is key in many areas including:

  • Ensuring that the strategic direction and values of BHASVIC are clearly articulated and by working closely with the Principal and Governance Professional to ensure the strategy is delivered in line with our values.  Working with Governors to ensure that there is effective and appropriate oversight of the Corporation and a “critical friend” challenge to the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team.  Working in partnership with Chairs of other colleges, other learning bodies and local community organisations so that BHASVIC is engaged in the wider skills and learning debate and understands local needs.

The successful applicant needs to have an ability to work in partnership within and outside the college, be able to challenge and debate in a respectful and thought-provoking way. Critical to the role will be experience of leading teams and insights on the function of Governance would be valued. Further information can be found in the role description below.

Company

We are a successful Sixth Form College, graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012.

About 50% of our students come from Brighton and Hove, but many come from other state and independent schools throughout Sussex. The same variety of backgrounds, cultures and interests that make the Brighton area unique, also makes the College a lively, stimulating place to work.

The vast majority of our students are in the 16-19 age range, and following full-time courses. We have a strong local reputation for the academic success of our students and for our focus on individuals’ needs.

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and very much value the individual contribution that each of our staff make to our continuing success.  Our last staff satisfaction survey found that nearly 90% of staff at BHASVIC enjoyed their job.

The College is within walking distance of Brighton town centre, Brighton train station and is on a main bus route.  Please note that there is limited parking on the College campus and parking permits are allocated according to the distance you have to travel to work.
