Adur Special Needs Play Assistant

We are looking to add to our team of Play Assistant, providing 1:1 care for the children with SEN who acess our service.

Our Playscheme runs at Herons Dale Primary School 2nd & 4th Saturday of Term Time.

This is a paid role with wages starting from £10.75 per hour.

Hours 8.30am – 4.00pm, 2nd and 4th Saturdays


Job Summary
The work of Adur Special Needs Project Play Assistants will be to support and supervise children and young people with special needs, and their volunteers, and to supervise a range of play activities for these children and young people, as requested by the Supervisor.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • To assist in the organisation and implementation of a range of activities for children and young people with special needs, as requested by the Adur Special Needs Project Supervisor.
  • To provide support and supervision on a 1:1 basis with an allocated child.
  • To participate in activities both on site and off site, including outings, as requested.
  • To be available for daily debriefing at the end of each session, unless otherwise agreed with the Supervisor.
  • To observe confidentiality in matters relating to individuals, families and volunteers within the guidelines determined by the Management Committee and as requested by the Supervisor.
  • To be answerable to the Supervisor at all times.
  • To attend for training and supervision as requested.
  • To act at all times, in accordance with Adur Special Needs Project’s policy on Equal Opportunities.
  • To undertake any duties regarding health and safety, personnel support and welfare at work which may reasonably be allocated to the post-holder to ensure that legislation and agreed codes of practice be implemented and maintained at all times.

Person Specification


Essential Experience and Attributes

  • Proven experience of working with children and young people with special needs in either a paid or voluntary capacity, preferably qualified to Level 2.
  • Proven experience of working with children and young people.
  • Aged 16 or over.

Desirable Experience and Attributes

  • Understanding of working with volunteers.
  • Childcare, teaching, play or youth work qualifications.
  • Play-worker accreditation.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment.
  •  Good communications skills.

Our Charity runs play schemes for local Adur Children with registered Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Adur Special Needs Project is an equal opportunities registered charity which provides much needed out-of-school respite care and play schemes for children aged five to 15 years with special/additional support needs, and/or physical disabilities from Adur.

Offering a Saturday play scheme held at Herons Dale Primary School, Hawkins Crescent, Shoreham on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month during school term times, ASNP supports local children in a wide range of challenging and fun activities, designed to grow their self-confidence, sense of self-esteem, and communication skills.
