Teacher of Psychology and/or Criminology

Applied Diploma WJEC Level 3

Full and/or part-time positions available required to start 1st September 2023

We are seeking to appoint teachers of one or both subjects and will consider applicants seeking full-time or part-time positions.

We are one of the top-performing colleges in the country, situated in the cosmopolitan seaside city of Brighton & Hove. Working here offers the combination of both a wonderful place to work and a great city in which to live. Our students and staff are aspirational and hard-working – which is perhaps why 96% of employees would “recommend BHASVIC as a good place to work” and many of our students go on to Higher Education.

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and well organised teachers to contribute to this successful and thriving College. In return you will join a vibrant college community which is an open, friendly, and supportive.  As a college, we are ambitious for our students, and we are seeking to appoint staff who can bring the right blend of flexibility, commitment, energy, and vision.  We welcome applications from teachers with ideas, enthusiasm, and a strong teaching ability, who can work within the diverse demands of the department whilst maintaining its recognised strengths and attributes.

Psychology is a well-established and popular department within the College. There are over 850 students taking A level Psychology (AQA).  All teachers teach across the whole specification, with the department working closely as a team and sharing the planning of teaching resources.  The department also offers the WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Criminology.  This is a very popular subject and numbers are expected to rise to over 200 students in 2023-24. There are currently 14 members of the department.

The department is friendly, innovative, and dynamic and have extremely high standards for all our students.  We aim to develop their knowledge, skills, and experience in a stimulating and varied learning environment.  We employ diverse strategies of teaching, learning, motivation and tracking so that all students can access the understanding and knowledge needed to prepare them effectively for examination and beyond. Students are expected to work independently on activities such as reading, research and note-making, supported by relevant activities in class.  Termly monitoring and negotiated targets ensure that each student is given the opportunity to be actively involved in their learning.  Many in the department also work as Tutors, focusing on the pastoral development of students and the department offers a number of enrichment activities.

Company

We are a successful Sixth Form College, graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012.

About 50% of our students come from Brighton and Hove, but many come from other state and independent schools throughout Sussex. The same variety of backgrounds, cultures and interests that make the Brighton area unique, also makes the College a lively, stimulating place to work.

There are approximately 2500 students on roll, of whom the vast majority (approximately 99%) follow Level 3 courses (mostly AS, A levels or BTECs) with the remainder following ESOL courses. The vast majority of our students are in the 16-19 age range, and following full-time courses. We have a strong local reputation for the academic success of our students and for our focus on individuals’ needs.

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and very much value the individual contribution that each of our staff make to our continuing success.  Our last staff satisfaction survey found that nearly 90% of staff at BHASVIC enjoyed their job.

The College is within walking distance of Brighton town centre, Brighton train station and is on a main bus route.  Please note that there is limited parking on the College campus and parking permits are allocated according to the distance you have to travel to work.
