Job Details

Brighton College Prep School is seeking a dynamic and creative Head of Drama on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Head, line managed by the Deputy Head (Operations)

Drama department oversight and management (Years 2 to 8):

• To be responsible for the delivery all drama and dramatic performances/ productions given by Years 2 to 8.

• To ensure all performances/productions are of a high quality and standard.

• To direct the relevant performances/ productions in collaboration with the musical director.

• To oversee the scheduling of the following, in liaison with the Deputy Head (Operations):

  • Assist with the Nursery to Year 3 Christmas Shows
  • Year 4 Christmas Show, musical and recital evening
  • Annual Year 5 Extravaganza evening
  • Annual Year 6 production
  • Annual Year 7/8 production

• To deliver and promote the activity of the drama department through drama evenings and after-school recitals.

• To participate in weekly Drama and music meetings with the Deputy Head (Operations)

• To liaise with the Heads of Drama in the Family of Schools to deliver an annual Family of Schools Festival of Drama

• To ensure that all pupils in Years 2 to 8 have the opportunity to participate in at least one dramatic performance per year.

• To liaise with parents concerning enquiries/questions about drama department activity and performance.

• To pro-actively promote and publicise drama performances/productions, activity and success.

• To direct a high-quality performance to be used at Speech Day, including adequate rehearsal, arrangements for set up, and attendance on the day.

• To identify pupils who may undertake drama scholarships at 13+.

• To fully prepare pupils for drama scholarships at 13+ in line with the requirements for this outlined by the respective schools.

• To actively liaise with the Head of Year 8, the parents and the participating schools on the scholarship candidates.

• To attend regular production meetings with the production team, chaired by the Deputy Head (Operations).

• To arrange and publicise in advance a comprehensive rehearsal schedule for all productions, in liaison with relevant staff, to include weekends for technical and dress rehearsals when necessary.

• To liaise with Art and DT departments in order to prepare props and scenery for productions and recitals.

• To oversee all production logistics, including arranging costumes, set design, venue selection and staging, involving relevant staff where necessary.

• To liaise with Marketing on the production of all PR material, including Save the Date flyers, production programmes, ticketing information, Newsletter articles and publicity posters.

• To liaise with the office team regarding ticketing, booking and billing process for tickets.

• To liaise with the College AV team and be responsible for the visual/sound concepts included in all performances/productions.

• To liaise closely with all relevant members of SMT and HoD’s, including English, music, dance and the drama department at the College in order to provide a high quality drama provision.

• To actively liaise with the College drama department on productions, departmental initiatives and activity.

• To contribute to the school improvement plan and department development plan.

• To contribute to the program of activities available for the gifted or very able children.

• To provide regular input to the IT platforms used by the school, including Firefly, the Parent Portal and the website.

• To hold a minimum of three departmental meetings per year and produce minutes, encouraging colleagues to play an active role in planning and review.

• To provide relevant materials for display on Open Mornings and parent evenings, including performance pieces, when requested.

• To support Co-curricular enrichment through trip and clubs.

• To provide a drama related activity for the Year 8 post CE programme.

Curriculum teaching:

• To be an inspirational teacher with high expectations of all pupils. To teach another curriculum subject as well as Drama.

• To have a passion for delivering a varied and innovative drama curriculum to pupils in Years 2 to 8.

• To liaise with colleagues in order to maximise opportunities for cross-curricular teaching.

• To prepare and encourage pupils to achieve success in any national, subject related events.

• To complete the reporting cycle for all pupils being taught, including interims, reports and attendance at Parents’ Evenings as required.

• To celebrate pupils’ work through drama displays throughout the school.

• To promote digital learning via the effective use of ICT when teaching.

• To create and maintain effective partnerships with relevant staff and with parents to support and improve pupils’ achievements and personal development.

LAMDA:

  • To manage the LAMDA programme offered by the school, including:
  • Enrolments
  • Entry to LAMDA exams
  • Management of LAMDA exams
  • Administration of LAMDA fee charges, exam charges and competition fees
  • To line manage any additional LAMDA teachers employed by the school.
  • Any reasonable requests from the Head.

Safeguarding responsibilities:

• This role will involve daily contact with pupils and you will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children

• All staff and volunteers have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for who you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.
