Compassionate Neighbours Volunteers
Compassionate Neighbours is a community-led project aimed at bringing our community closer together by tackling loneliness and isolation for people who are either living with a terminal illness or caring for someone who is, across Brighton, Hove and the Havens.
Compassionate Neighbours is a national social movement that has been successful in other parts of the UK. Martlets has effectively introduced this programme locally to encourage people to connect with each other and make a difference to members of their community coping with the impact of terminal illness and to help reduce social isolation.
The programme aims to provide a group of trained neighbours who offer their time and companionship to local people struggling with loneliness and are in need of support.
What will I be doing? A Compassionate Neighbour can help by providing regular phone calls or in person visits, offering a listening ear and emotional support or helping people to do activities they enjoy and staying connected to their local community and family and friends.
A Compassionate Neighbour might:
- Provide regular telephone calls to your matched community member
- Visit your community member in their own home or arrange to meet them in the community
- Offer friendship, emotional support and a listening ear
- Help people do the things they like doing
- Help people stay connected to the community as well as family and friends
Where? Over the phone, in their community member’s home or in the community, like a café or park
When? Occasionally to weekly (depending on the person)
Anything else I should know? Compassionate Neighbours will also receive regular support to help them develop their skills and confidence and all training and ongoing mentoring is provided free of charge.
Sounds good, what do I do next? Apply Now and a member of the team will be in contact to answer any questions, introduce you to some of our wonderful team and tell you more about this role.
This role is for people aged 18+
Company
Martlets is a charity that cares for people living through a terminal illness in and around Brighton and Hove.
We're much more than a hospice. Most of our patients are cared for in their own home.
Our team supports people to live their lives to the full, taking the time to give exceptional care. We're also here for their family and friends- bringing comfort, compassion and support when it matters most.
Thanks to the generosity of local people, our care is free for everyone who needs it. Although we're not part of the NHS, we work in close partnership with them.
