In a nutshell

The Engineer – Design & Development will provide mechanical, technical and design expertise in support of the VAA Aircraft Fleet. Responsible for specification and implementation of fleet maintenance and modification policies, investigation of mechanical defects and formulation of corrective actions to maintain maximum safety, system integrity and reliability at optimum cost. Provision of mechanical operational and EASA Part 21 design support to VAA Hangar scheduled maintenance, line operation, AOG aircraft and heavy maintenance. Control and definition of aircraft modification status to meet future operational and mandatory requirements.


Day to day

Provision of immediate technical support and rectification action in response to operational problems, incidents and AOG situations, ensuring safety and airworthiness whilst minimising operational disruption and costs

Compiling and/or approving design and maintenance documentation under the organisations EASA Part 21, Subpart J and Part 145 approvals

Review of technical documents issued by aircraft manufacturers, equipment vendors and regulatory bodies, assessing implications and implementing the appropriate action to ensure continued compliance with regulatory requirements

Specifying and implementing fleet maintenance and modification policies to meet future operational requirements

Liaising with Engineering and Flight Safety departments to ensure ASR’s and MOR’s are investigated and acted upon in a timely manner in accordance with the company’s Safety Management System

Monitoring and investigating defects and formulating corrective actions to maintain safety, system integrity and reliability at optimum cost

Providing main point of contact for liaison between the airline, manufacturers, equipment vendors and regulatory bodies

Act as the mechanical technical focal for the integration of new aircraft into the Virgin Atlantic fleet e.g. Airbus 339 Neo.

Working with external OEMS, vendors and internal departments to project manage modification programmes.

Representing the company on a technical basis, at industry working groups, meetings and conferences.

About you

Are you an experienced Aircraft Engineer, working in the technical services environment? If so, we think this would be the ideal role for you. In order to perform effectively in this role (and enjoy it), we would require you to have the following skills and experience:

We are looking for candidates who hold aviation related engineering degree/HND or have completed a recognised apprenticeship in Aircraft Engineering with knowledge and qualifications to the level of an EASA B1 Licence (or equivalent). Previous experience in an airline or OEM design/development engineering department is required.

You must be thorough, detailed and analytical in approach to work with an ability to provide innovative solutions to problems. Have strong demonstrable negotiation and interpersonal skills with excellent verbal and written communications skills. You’ll have the ability to work well on your own initiative or as part of a team, as required. You’ll need to be flexible, with the ability to adapt and respond to changing demands whilst working under pressure

You’ll be computer literate and have a working knowledge of aircraft systems.
